What is Elderly Abandonment and How Grace Home Klang Helps To Provide Shelter

Elderly abandonment refers to the act of leaving older individuals without care or support, often in unfamiliar or unsafe environments. This growing issue is particularly concerning in Malaysia where the ageing population is increasing. From 2018 to 2022, over 2100 senior citizens were abandoned in hospitals nationwide. Many families cite financial strain as a significant factor, as nursing home fees can be prohibitive, leading to difficult decisions.

Grace Home Klang, officially known as Persatuan Kebajikan Rumah Grace Klang, has been a sanctuary for the destitute since 1980. Founded by Reverend Dr. Henry K. Pillai, the home provides shelter and care for abused, neglected, and homeless elderly women. The organization is a nonprofit charitable entity, officially registered in 1996.

Located in Klang, Grace Home offers a safe haven where residents receive food, clothing, medical care, and counselling. The home also focuses on improving the spiritual well-being of each resident and ensures that the living conditions meet regulatory health requirements.

By providing a loving and caring environment, Grace Home Klang plays a vital role in addressing the challenges faced by abandoned elderly individuals, offering them dignity, hope, and a sense of belonging.

According to Social Work Department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), the statistics of patients being left at HKL showed an upward trend each year (see graphic). Hundreds of patients are abandoned by their families at government hospitals. These abandoned seniors are occupying hospital beds that are in high demand as there is a long list of patients in need of medical attention and awaiting admission.
